Each year the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee chooses various community service projects in which to participate. Listed below are the current projects.
Adopt-A-Street
The SAAC has adopted Fremont Ave. between Grand St. and Bennett St. The street in cleaned approximately once a month.
Adopt-A-Family
Each year the SAAC asks every student-athlete to donate at least $1.00. These donations are used to purchase Christmas gifts for families or children that otherwise would not have gifts during the holiday season.
As each team travels and spends time in various hotels, the unused soaps and shampoos provided in the rooms are collected. These toiletries are then delivered to the Family Violence Center for distribution to those in need.
Just Read
The Just Read Program, sponsored by State Farm Insurance, is administered through the Missouri Valley Conference. The Missouri State SAAC participates with local elementary schools. Each semester, the student-athletes visit the classrooms to read to the students and discuss the importance of reading at all ages. The goal is to visit each classroom at least one time per semester.
Habitat for Humanity
Each year various teams visit building sites and help the Habitat for Humanity organization in building homes.
Lunch Visits
The elementary school students at Rountree have the privilege of bringing a guest to eat lunch with them. Some students do not have someone who can come to lunch, so the student-athletes visit the school to eat with those students.
Reverse Trick-or-Treat
Each Halloween, the SAAC organizes a trip to a local hospital or children's center to visit kids who are unable to participate in Halloween activities due to health issues or other circumstances. The student-athletes deliver candy and coloring books and spend time with the kids.
Food for the Needy
The SAAC organized a food collection at a Women's Basketball game, with the donated food going to an organization for distribution to those who need it during the holiday season.
Toys For Tots
In conjunction with the US Marines, the student-athletes helped collect toys and cash donations at a Men's Basketball game.
Book Fair Visit
At the request of a local middle school, several student-athletes visited the school library during its annual book fair. The student-athletes visited with students and encouraged them to read.
