Academic Support Services

  • The Academic Advisement Center is responsible for advising Missouri State University undergraduates who are in the process of selecting majors. Academic advising encourages students to choose academically rigorous courses and programs of study as they pursue their intellectual curiosities and provides students with the individual attention needed to nurture personal growth and to participate in co-curricular activities. The Academic Advisement Center provides services, programs and publications to assist academic departments in providing quality advising to all Missouri State University students. Advising has a strong impact on student learning and retention by providing each student with a caring role model.
    Services Offered to the Campus Community:
    1. Provide one-on-one academic advisement for all new, continuing and transfer students with undeclared majors
    2. Make available programs to benefit students as they explore majors such as the Majors Fair.
    3. Supply outreach activities such as presentations for SOAR, IDS 110 classes and workshops for conditionally admitted students
    4. Implement the Master Advisor Program
  • The Citizenship and Service Learning (CASL) was established by MSU’s Faculty Senate in 1996 to serve the University and the community. CASL works with three constituents: faculty, students and community partners. The CASL staff supports faculty with service-learning course consultation, fellowship programs and research stipends. CASL advises students with service-learning placements and partnerships. CASL collaborates with the community’s identified needs by providing networking opportunities, student placements, and developing long-term reciprocal relationships. CASL operates under the Public Affairs umbrella as we seek to engage students with active service-learning opportunities that underscore course objectives, tied together with reflection exercises.

  • The English Language Institute provides English language learners with skills for academic and career success.  Through a five-level, 25-hour per week program, we offer classes in writing/grammar, reading/vocabulary skills, listening/note-taking strategies, and oral communication/presentation skills, with optional classes in spelling and pronunciation. We also provide customized tutoring for students and community professionals and we host groups for customized programs of varying lengths.  The ELI staff of 24 serves approximately 130 students per semester, processing ELI and MSU conditional admissions, maintaining student records in Banner and SEVIS, and interfacing with other units on campus to provide services to our students.

  • The office of International Student Services is the home base for all international students at the University.  We work with the students from the time they apply until they are job-hunting after graduating.  We are here to assist with cultural adjustment issues, academic concerns, immigration needs or with anything else our international students might need assistance.  We are dedicated to making their experience at MSU the best possible so that they feel they belong in the university community.

  • The primary goal of the Counseling and Testing Center is to promote students' development and psychological well-being.  Services are provided for individuals with personal-social concerns and life-planning issues.  Experienced professional counselors, psychologists, social workers, and graduate students assist clients in resolving conflicts which may interfere with their progress at the University.
  • The Office of Disability Services appreciates disability as an integral part of the University experience. We are committed to providing equal access and opportunity to all campus programs and services for persons with disabilities. Through collaboration and support of the entire campus community, Disability Services promotes disability pride, self-determination of the student, and universally accessible design principles, so that everyone has full access to University life.
  • The Learning Diagnostic Clinic provides services and support with care and concern to each individual student. Our collaborative approach helps insure that students with Learning Disabilities or those otherwise qualified are able to access and participate in the extraordinary array of academics available at Missouri State University.
  • The Writing Center is a welcoming place for you to gain advice on any writing assignment regardless of the course or topic. Whether you are just beginning an assignment or are in the final stages of a project, we can help! Undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty use this free academic support service to workshop papers for their academic courses, creative writing, speeches, presentations, course syllabi, and articles intended for publication. It is the Writing Center’s philosophy that improved writing skills lead to educational and professional success in college and beyond.

    2. Programming on citation methods, writing styles, note-taking, test-taking, and others
    3. Custom presentations on writing for departments/organizations

  • The Missouri State University Learning Commons is located in Meyer library. The Bear CLAW (Center for Learning and Writing) is located on the first floor, southeast corner, of in Meyer library. This new interactive space unites the resources and expertise of the faculty, library personnel, computer and information technology, the Writing Center, subject-area tutoring, and supplemental instruction in an environment that fosters informal, collaborative work, and social interaction. The Bear CLAW includes subject area tutoring, the Writing Center, and will deliver a variety of workshops designed to improve student success.
