Missouri State University
Problem A: Impaired and distracted driving, failure to use seat belt, and lack of safe transportation for University students.
Goal for Problem A: Decrease DWI/DUI and frequency of driving under the influence by 5% per year for 10 years, increase use of seat belts, and realize a new alternative for student transportation to and from downtown Springfield. To be assessed utilizing the Missouri College Health Behavior Survey and comparing it to prior CORE Data when possible and through parking lot exit surveys of seat belt use.
Strategy A1.1: Provide prevention education regarding impaired and distracted driving, and seat belt use.
Activity A1.1: Provide a copy of GreeneCounty’s Graduated Sanctions for DWI. and the University’s Graduated Sanctions for alcohol related offenses to all residence hall students and Greek community members.

Problem B: Students continue in the excessive consumption of alcohol and experience of harmful effects
Goal: Reduce the consumption of alcohol by minors 3% every year for 10 years. To be assessed utilizing the Missouri College Health Behavior Survey, the CORE Survey, and Judicial Programs discipline statistics.
Strategy B1: Provide Prevention, Education and Intervention regarding excessive consumption of alcohol.

Problem C: Students who abstain from alcohol need more appealing late night activities and these same activities are needed as a safe alternative for those who choose to consume alcohol.
Goal: Realize an increase in the utilization of late night non-alcoholic events and decreases in the average number of days students consume alcohol and the average number of times students consume five or more drinks within a two hour period within two weeks.
Strategy: Expand current non-alcoholic alternative programming and increase promotion of other non-alcoholic options.
Activity C.1: Sponsor the After Hours program every Thursday night in collaboration with student organizations (RHA, SAC, Greeks, Campus Ministers Council) Athletics, and Sodexo Dining and Rock n’ Bowl every Friday night.

Problem D: Over the last three years, the use of amphetamines and cocaine has progressively increased while the volume of campus marijuana violations has remained relatively unchanged.
Goal: Arrest the increase of amphetamine and cocaine use and realize a decline in the number of marijuana and paraphernalia violations. To be assessed utilizing the Missouri College Health Behavior Survey in comparison to past CORE Survey Results and Judicial Programs statistics.
Strategy: Expand prevention, education, and intervention regarding illegal drug use by University students.

Problem F: There is a lack of dialog and resources for parents, faculty, staff, and students regarding student alcohol and drug abuse and consequences.
Goal: To create and expand partnerships among parents, faculty, and staff in addressing student substance abuse and other health behaviors.
Strategy: Expand opportunities for productive interactions with parents, faculty, staff, and students concerning student health behaviors through current communication mechanisms.
Activity F1: Continue to provide “parental notification” for alcohol violations that endanger the health or safety of the student such as alcohol poisoning or a third alcohol violation. All alcohol violations are cumulative.

Activity G.3: Conduct sexual assault prevention programs.

Problem H: Suicide gestures, threats, and attempts put students at significant risk of injury or death and negatively impact other students, faculty, and staff.
Goal: To develop a University community in which faculty, staff, and students are able to recognize and appropriately respond to students who are in crisis and a team that works cooperatively in developing and performing effective interventions.
Strategy: Refine intervention protocols so that they are responsive to the needs of the students who are in crisis and develop educational programs and materials that assist members of the University community in recognizing and referring students who are in crisis.
Activity H.1: Continue Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) biweekly meetings to alert appropriate staff to emerging threats of harm, to evaluate responses to students in crisis, and to guide revisions to University policies and procedures regarding suicide.

Problem I: Gambling has been identified as an emerging problem for students, yet there is little awareness about problem gambling within the campus community.
Goal: That students, faculty, and staff can distinguish between legal and illegal gambling activities, recognize symptoms of problem gambling, and effectively intervene to help a problem gambler.
Strategy: Provide programming and intervention staff with training opportunities appropriate to their responsibilities and develop and distribute materials that will increase problem gambling recognition.
