While he was in Excelsior Springs High School, John Bowen knew he wanted a degree in business. So, when he heard good things about Missouri State's business school, he knew where he wanted to go.
After changing his major a couple of times, he eventually settled on a general business major. "The fiance and general business department was exceptional and many of my professors were great. Whenever I had the choice, I took finance classes. In fact, even though my major was general business, I almost had enough credits for a finance major too!"
In the basic business law class with Dr. Stan Leasure, Bowen became interested in the legal field. "It wasn't too difficult, but you did have to make sure you studied hard to succeed. It was a fun class, too."
He said his finance professors were one reason why he started liking finance. "They weren't just trying to teach us classroom material; they wanted to push us to be successful and to spark our interest and I think they succeeded. There's no better thing you can do as a professor."
Bowen found it really easy to get involved on campus. He was involved in Phi Alpha Delta, Beta Gamma Sigma, the Ultimate Frisbee Club and more. "I was also a teacher's assistant for Dr. Leasure's negotiation class one semester. It was a class I had already taken as a student, but being his TA taught me much more. It was a great experience. That class changed my thinking process and has had a positive effect on almost every aspect of my life. I even got to write a paper with him that was published in a law journal."
Bowen also thinks highly of the student body at Missouri State. "The students at Missouri State are very down to Earth. Everyone had their goals and they were working toward them without judging others. Also, people looked out for each other. It was a breath of fresh air, as far as I remember."
Bowen is currently going to law school at the University of Illinois. His plans after law school include returning to his hometown of Excelsior Springs, where he plans to open a law firm with his brother. "I feel like I am doing exactly what I want to do and I can do that because of the business background I got from Missouri State."
