Student followed her passion for swimming and political science to Missouri State

Arkansas native and alumna Laura Peterson, wanted to find the perfect place to pursue her two passions in life, swimming and political science. Peterson selected Missouri State because of its great reputation in and out of the pool.

Peterson was a member of the Missouri State Women’s swimming and diving team and competed in the 200 free, 200 fly and1650 freestyle. The team won the Missouri Valley Conference championships all four years that Peterson was a member.

Selecting a political science major seemed like the perfect fit for Peterson, who has always been interested in national news and current world events. She decided to focus her studies on comparative politics and international relations.

Guidance is something that helped Peterson throughout her undergraduate career. “Missouri State University has a big campus feel but a personal and small school feel. I credit the great professors in the political science department,” said Peterson. “These great teachers are the reason I found my passion in political science and learning about other cultures and political systems.”

Good time management is what she attributes as the key to her success. “Being both a student athlete and being a successful student requires a lot of hard work, organization and prioritizing,” said Peterson. “I found a balance through using the great resources of the University; some of these include the Achievement Center for Intercollegiate Athletics and Writing Center.”

The champion swimmer also benefited from academic scholarships offered by the political science department. She received two departmental scholarships the— Dr. Alice Fleetwood Bartee Scholarship and the Frank Dinka Comparative Politics Scholarship.

Peterson is attending The University of Arkansas School of Law where she will study international law and hopes to work for an international aid organization in the future.
