"The courses in the program gave me an edge"

Springfield native Ashtyn Evans is able to maintain her professional relationships in the field thanks to the MBA program's focus on networking.

How I show love to my alma mater: I’m still very connected to the University! I speak with my professors all the time; they’re still my mentors. My sister is in the nursing program at the University and my father-in-law is one of the baseball coaches. We have a lot of MSU pride in the family.

What I do at work: I’m a stock analyst. I look at valuing companies, and use critical thinking every day. I give advice to clients who are serious long-term investors. I get to dig deep into the roots of companies and find out which are going to provide the best investments for my clients.

Why I chose MSU: I’m from Springfield. I went to high school here, and was looking for a Midwest location to be close to family. I got a scholarship for tuition so that definitely brought me! I also thought the academic opportunities were far better than other colleges — I knew they had a great business program.

How the program helped me start my career: Once I knew I wanted to concentrate on finance, I really started focusing on investment classes and the stock market. I got an internship with Scottrade. The program helped me get comfortable networking and maintaining contacts with professionals in my field.

My favorite class: The New York study class. We went to N.Y. for a week, visiting different companies and reporting on different industries. The courses in the program gave me an edge. The faculty have a lot of real-world experience in their fields, and have specialty knowledge.
