From helping lead his fraternity to guiding new students through registration, Scott Turk applies his communication major on a daily basis.
“Getting involved was the most important thing that I decided to do in college,” said Turk. “Not only is it important to get a ‘hands on’ look at communication principles, it helps me to polish public speaking roles, practice on how to communicate effectively in leadership positions and understand what it takes to be a leader.”
It was during his time as a SOAR leader that Turk was first introduced to the communication department and its program offerings. Through his campus involvement and his work as a SOAR leader, Turk discovered that he enjoyed speaking and communication.
Turk’s interest in communication extends beyond the classroom. His success as a leader in a variety of campus activities and organizations is due, in part, to his presentation skills and ability to engage his audience. Turk is studying socio-political communication in hopes of attending law school upon graduation and then becoming a public servant.
“Communication is something that I thoroughly enjoy,” said Turk. “Growing up in a society that is increasingly becoming faceless and voiceless through computers and texting, it is interesting to understand how communication is always evolving. Technology plays a large part in that, and I love exploring technology’s affect on people.”
