Prerequisite Courses for Admission into the
Missouri State University Physical Therapy Program

Admission into the Physical Therapy Program is competitive.  Completion of the listed prerequisites does not guarantee admission into the program.  Prerequisites are subject to change.

English

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  6 semester hours are required.
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State:
    • ENG 110 or 111
    • ENG 205 or 215
    • ENG 310 or 321
  • Courses that are preferred: Courses that include general writing or composition, or creative writing or technical writing.
  • Other Recommended Courses: Spanish.  Example: SPN 101

Mathematics

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  3 semester hours are required.
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State: MTH 135
  • Courses that are preferred: College Algebra is required.
  • Other Recommended Courses: Trigonometry. Example: MTH 181

Statistics

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  3 semester hours are required.
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State: MTH 340, MTH 545, ECO 308, QBA 237, SOC 302, BIO 550,  or PSY 200,
  • Courses that are preferred: Courses that include the use of computer statistical packages are preferred.

Traditional Physics

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  6 semester hours are required.
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State: PHY 123 and PHY 124
  • Courses that are preferred: Course must be "computational" in nature. "Survey" courses will NOT fulfill the requirement.

Chemistry

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  6 semester hours are required.
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State: CHM 160, 170 or 200
  • Courses that are preferred: General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry
  • Other Recommended Courses: Introduction to Biochemistry. Example: CHM 350

Psychology

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  6 semester hours are required.
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State: PSY 121 and PSY 304
  • Courses that are preferred: One course should cover basic psychology, and one should include abnormal psychology.
  • Other Recommended Courses: Behavior Management and Change. Example: PSY 508

Biomedical Sciences or General Biology

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  6-8 semester hours (two course) are required.
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State:
    • BMS 110 and BMS 230, OR
    • BIO 121 and BIO 122
  • Courses that are preferred: Course that relate the basic science to health care are preferred.
  • Other Recommended Courses: Cellular Biology.  Example: BIO 320 or BMS 521

Human or Vertebrate Anatomy

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  4 semester hours are required. (Lab not required)
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State: BMS 307
  • Courses that are preferred: Human Anatomy

Human or Vertebrate Physiology

  • Prerequisites (listed as a minimum):  4 semester hours are required. (Lab not required)
  • Examples of courses at Missouri State: BMS 308
  • Courses that are preferred: Human Physiology

 

Note: Other courses, combination of courses, or documented experience may apply to some of the prerequisites.
