Three Areas of GenEd

 The General Education Program is sub-divided into three areas.

Basic Required Courses (11-20 hours)

  • Computers for Learning

  • Public Speaking

  • Writing

  • Mathematics

  • Fitness for Living

Areas of Inquiry (23-25 hours)

This area of the General Education Program includes:

  • Natural World, a study of our world through courses in Astronomy, Physics, Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Geography

  • Culture & Society, a study of our culture and society through courses in humanities and social sciences

  • Self-Understanding, a study of the self through courses in social and behavioral science, humanities and creativity and vision

Public Affairs

This area of the General Education Program includes:

  • American History

  • American and Missouri Government

  • The Capstone Course (has been suspended until fall, 2010) that brings the General Education experience together with the University's statewide mission in Public Affairs in a seminar course offering many different topics such as:

    • Animal Rights Movement and the Social Construction of Reality

    • Disability Issues for the 21st Century

    • Going Grey Behind Bars: Social, Economic, and Personal Implications of "Getting Tough" on Crime

    • Homelessness
