Transfer students are students who have completed 24 or more transferable credit hours at other colleges and/or universities subsequent to high school graduation.
Transfer students from Missouri public colleges and universities may follow the general education and general baccalaureate degree requirements in effect at Missouri State University when they first enrolled (or re-enrolled after an absence of one calendar year or more) as degree-seeking students at the institutions from which they transferred. The general education catalog year for these students will be established at the point of admission on the basis of this policy. Students who elect instead to follow the general education and general baccalaureate degree requirements in effect during the first semester at Missouri State University may do so by notifying the Degree Check Office.
Students who transfer to Missouri State University from an accredited college or university with an Associate of Arts degree will be considered to have met all the LOWER division general education requirements of Missouri State University.
During summer, 2000, the Coordinating Board for the Higher Education in Missouri approved a new general education transfer policy. This policy requires all participating institutions (public and private) in the state to designate a general education block consisting of at least 42 semester hours of credit which addresses 8 state-defined general education goals. When this new system is fully operational, students who complete the 42 hour general education block at one institution may transfer to another participating institution and have their block treated as equivalent to the general education block of the receiving institution. Any general education classes outside the 42 hour block that are required of all students at the receiving institution may also be required of incoming transfer students.
The Missouri State University 42 hour transfer block consists of all the courses comprising the on-campus general education program (See the General Education Worksheet) EXCEPT: IDS110 and HST121-122. In the later instance, students without an appropriate American history class on their transfer transcript will be required to complete such a class at Missouri State University.
Students who transfer to Missouri State University without either an Associate of Arts degree or a completed 42 hour general education block from a participating Missouri institution have their transcripts evaluated on a course-by-course basis. The results of this evaluation are sent to the students once they have been admitted to the university. Questions regarding these evaluations should be referred to the Office of Admissions.
Students transferring from other Missouri colleges and universities should be aware that a designated articulation officer is available to assist students who encounter difficulties in transferring their classes. Dr. John Catau, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Programs, is the Missouri State University articulation officer. He may be contacted in Carrington Hall 209 or at (417) 836-4589.
Transfer equivalences from many Missouri colleges and universities are available on the Missouri State University web site at https://www.secure.missouristate.edu/appadm/transequiv/transequiv.asp
There are times when the evaluation of a transfer student's transcript results in one of more courses being designated as electives (i.e., there are no clear cut course equivalences in the Missouri State University curriculum). If the student wishes to have the course re-evaluated to see if it might be the direct equivalent of a specific Missouri State University class, they should contact the head of the department where the course in question is offered.
If, on the other hand, the student wishes to have the course re-evaluated to see if it may be used to fulfill a Missouri State University general education requirement, they should make an appointment to meet with Dr. John Catau, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Programs, who is the Missouri State University articulation officer. He may be contacted in Carrington Hall 209 or at (417) 836-4589. When they meet with Dr. Catau they should take along supporting information (e.g., a course policy statement, a catalog description, etc.) which depicts the content of the course in question.
If Dr. Catau agrees that the course satisfies the "spirit" of one of our general education categories, he will assign a GEP code to the class.
The GEP codes are listed below along with their applicability to both the old and new general education programs. If a student's transfer evaluation form or audit shows a GEP code it means the course may be used to satisfy that category of our general education program.
