Girls from Rare Breed treated to makeover, senior pics
To a passerby, it might have seemed like just another busy Saturday morning at the Alchemy Salon on Commercial Street. Three young ladies were having their hair styled for senior pictures. As stylist Sa'dia Luallen-Blattert put the finishing touches on 19-year-old Kaia Friend's short wavy bob, the Glendale grad smiled with appreciation and pride. A trip to the salon and new clothes for senior pictures is something many teens take for granted. But for the three young ladies at Alchemy, it was a luxury — a gift from the Springfield NAACP Youth Chapter and the people who donated time, talents and money to make it happen. Before panic could set in, NAACP Youth Chapter adviser Shuita Thomas-Tate, of MSU, posted on Facebook: "SOS!!! Our NAACP youth project is happening NOW!
