Call to order

Election of Chair

Thomas Lane nominated Jim Moyer as committee chairMotion seconded by Marcia Morriset.  Jim Moyer was unanimously approved by members present.

Update—Fall 2009

  • All colleges represented on Committee except COE; member has been requested
  • IDS 110
    • Total sections: 97 (49 first-block and 48 full-semester sections)
    • Service-Learning Sections with Theme:  4 (each includes 8 hours of integrated service learning)
    • Learning Communities:  8 cohorts (5 cohorts with IDS 110, ENG 110 and COM 115 links, 2 cohorts with IDS 110, ENG 110 and HST 103 links, and 1 cohort linked to 2 sections of REL 101)
    • Living Learning Communities: 2 (CNAS)
  • Effective this fall Kathy Coy will run analysis giving credit hour production for IDS 110
  • Missouri State Experience online (MSX) discontinued

Common Reader Tied to Public Affairs Theme

  • Common Reader Committee (mix of faculty/staff and a Peer Leader); John Turner, chair
  • Recommendations of books suitable to use as common reader requested by Fri, Oct 9
    • Common reader to be offered to all sections

Teacher Recruitment

  • Anticipate need for 30-35 additional individuals to teach GEP 101
  • Recruitment efforts include meeting with colleges, promotional materials, word of mouth
  • Request present instructors return
  • New options suggested:  Recruiting Carousel or Fair for First-Year Initiatives (connect things such as service learning) and/or Reception honoring teachers with opportunity to share testimonials, success stories
  • Collaborate with Dr. Chantal Levesque-Bristol, FCTL, to develop teaching guides

GEP 101

  • Implement in Fall 2010: GEP 101 First-Year Foundations 2 (2-0) F, S, Su
  • Piloting alternatives under discussion by colleges
  • Must retain transition to college content and meet course goals and objectives
  • Funds set aside for learning communities
  • Blended online course; need a faculty member to develop
  • Determine logistics of distributing common reader and funding mechanism

Stipend

  • Approved stipend for Fall 2010 set at $2,000/section (budget crisis determined lower level than requested)
  • Revisit discussion of stipend
