Minutes of February 1, 2008
Call to Order
3:15 p.m. in UNVH 113 by Pauline Nugent
Tom Kane, Thomas Lane, Cindy Pemberton, Helen Reid, Art Spisak, John Steiert, and Mike Wood
Motion by Thomas Lane to accept minutes (distributed via email) passed unanimously.
Overview of First-Year Initiative Survey Results—Kathy Coy
FYI cam out of a joint project between the Policy Center on the First Year of College and EBI (Educational Benchmarking, Inc.). The survey was designed to measure the effectiveness of the first year course from the perspective of first-year students.
Administered to all IDS 110 students at the end of Fall 2007 term.
Update on FYRe
Feb 4—Cindy Pemberton to present overview of site to Provost and Student Success personnel
GoalQuest will be sending their main trainer to campus this spring
FYRe will include a link for IDS 110 instructors to share comments/ideas
Discussion of Suggested Items/Comments to Add to Current (Fa 08) Goals and Objectives
Course transition under current goals and objectives: Fall 2008-Spring 2009
If using variable content, submit description to First-Year Programs.
Variable content may be within discipline, scholarly interest, or related to one of the five elements or areas under public affairs.
Articulate goals and objectives for instructors (direction in using new things but not too prescriptive) i.e., link sustainability to discipline, what it means to be an educated person, and suggestions for using FYRe.
First-Year Programs does not have budget to pay overload. Clarification—$1,000 stipend based on agreement outside overload policy
Finalizing details for Dr. Connie Staley (likely 2nd week of April)
Additional workshops to be developed for IDS 110 instructors
- How to incorporate FYRe (GoalQuest staff will provide)
- Blackboard session just for IDS 110 instructors
Review Timelines for Course Revision
Course revision through CGEIP by April 9 to be ready for Faculty Senate in fall

- Clarification of goals and objectives for Fa 08
- Statements to faculty for inclusion in Sample Syllabus and FAQ
- Rough draft for CGEIP
- Draft syllabus—not mandating a book
