Compensation Issues/Concerns re: GEP 101

Tom Kane drafted a letter to Provost McCarthy to be sent on behalf of committee, which stated in part:

The First Year Programs Committee would like to schedule a meeting with you to discuss the compensation of GEP 101.

In our committee’s view, attracting excellent faculty into the GEP class, in addition to maintaining highly qualified staff who currently teach the class, defines a centerpiece of our GOP 101 initiative.  We also believe that the ‘doubling strategy’ of the GEP 101 stipend inadequately funds the class.  While $2,000 may provide an appropriate over-time incentive for staff to instruct the GEP class, that amount constitutes a rate of pay of 60 cents on the dollar for medium income faculty, given the current University workload policy.  In addition, the proposed stipend does not honor faculty qualifications deemed ‘compensable’ at Missouri State (educational level, rank, years in rank, and merit.

Pauline Nugent made a motion that the committee address the issue. Motion seconded by Olen Greer and carried.

Following discussion, the committee voted not to send the letter.

Helen Reid moved to invite the Provost to meet with the committee regarding compensation issues and concerns relating to GEP 101. Motion seconded by Olen Greer and carried.
