Writing Guide Tutorial

There is concern nationwide about the trend toward inadequate writing skills among college graduates. At Missouri State University, the administration and certain faculty groups are encouraging initiatives that will give our students more writing experiences in all departments.

Since the IDS 110 mission is to offer a foundation for student success, our students can begin in our classes to realize the value of good writing

  • in expressing their thinking,
  • in clearly responding to academic inquiry,
  • in preparing for their career goals and job searches.

Some University instructors are not comfortable with giving writing assignments, and/or are concerned about the grading of such assignments. The intention of this writing tutorial is to serve as a resource for instructors for giving good assignments and various rubrics for grading them.

In support of the English Composition program at Missouri State University, we encourage students to use MLA documentation when instructors require documentation. There are various documentation sources available online and in pamphlets at the Bookstore.

We are fortunate at Missouri State University to have a student-oriented Writing Center. Their website: www.missouristate.edu/writingcenter has online assistance and helpful handouts for students and instructors.

We are not trying to teach English Composition in IDS 110, but academia requires communicating through the written word. Writing is a foundation for student success.
