Hello Everyone! My name is Tara Simmons and I'm from Portageville, Missouri (which is in the bootheel of Missouri about an hour south of Cape Girardeau). I am currently a sophomore majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders: Speech-Language Pathology. This is my first year as a Peer Leader, and I am so excited to have this opportunity.
Coming from a town of 3,295 people, let me be the first to say that MSU was quite a different and intimidating place. There were so many people and I was unwilling at first to break out of my shell. However, I learned quickly that the people in my dorm, in class, and out in the campus were just as worried and we bonded over that. I have made several friends that I know will last a life-time in only 1 year here at MSU.
That is why my advice to all the incoming freshmen is to take the time to get to know someone. Do not be afraid to initiate conversations with fellow classmates and be willing to get to know them. If you feel more comfortable meeting people in groups then make sure to join one of MSU’s several organizations. There is something here for everyone, you just have to find your place!!!
