Course Description:
This workshop is to assist and instruct individuals in the First Steps program who provide services to children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Throughout this workshop the following subjects will be addressed: Hearing loss and the technology used to aid hearing, reading and deciphering audiograms, various hearing technologies for group and individual use, understanding functional performance of the devices, and the process of grieving in relation to hearing loss.
Course Objectives:
The students will be able to:
1) Perform a Ling 6+ Sounds listening check in a way that optimizes valid child responses.
2) Use audiometric results to identify potential strengths and needs in listening & spoken language.
3) Identify the similarities and differences between hearing aids and cochlear implant technologies.
4) Identify techniques/technologies to improve the signal-to-noise ratio across environments.
5) Demonstrate an understanding of hearing loss and the grieving process.
