Pell Policy

Federal Pell Grants, like all other types of federal aid, are subject to Missouri State University's policy on repeated coursework. The Repeated Courses and Financial Aid Eligibility Policy can be reviewed here.

Op5.08-2 Pell Grant Policy

A federal Pell Grant is a free grant that is available to eligible undergraduate students that have not earned a bachelor’s degree.  Student and family income that is provided on the FAFSA and enrollment status determine eligibility and award amount.  For fall and spring semesters, full-time status is 12 hours or more, three-quarter time is 9-11 hours, half-time is 6-8 hours and less than half-time is 1-5 hours.  The Office of Student Financial Aid at MSU uses Pell grant Formula 3 for determination of award amount.  As a result, for the summer semester, 6 hours are considered full-time, half-time is 3 hours and less than half-time is 1-2 hours.

Enrollment Deadline

The deadline for adding classes for Pell consideration is the end of the change of schedule period each semester.  Registration for all classes must be completed by this date, including Second Block classes, in order to be counted towards Pell eligibility.  Check the academic calendar for the change of schedule deadline for each semester.

Dual Enrollment

Pell recipients that are less than fulltime at MSU and dually enrolled with another accredited university may be eligible for a consortium agreement.  Requests for consortium must be received by the change of schedule period deadline each semester of dual enrollment.

Summer Policy

Missouri State University Office of Student Financial Aid defines an aid year as a fall and spring semester, with the summer term as a separate session considered a “trailer” semester. For the 2010-2011 aid year, (fall 10, spring 11, and summer 11 semesters) MSU will award students from their 2010-2011 FAFSA application. MSU will, however, review academic year progression in considering a student’s eligibility for a 2nd Pell for the summer 2011 semester.  A Pell eligible student may qualify for additional Pell funds during the summer session IF they meet ALL of the following criteria:

  1. Use all of their current aid year Pell eligibility before they can qualify for additional Pell funds, AND
  2. Complete at least 24 credit hours by the end of the spring semester OR at least 25 credit hours by the end of the summer session, AND
  3. Be enrolled at least half-time (3 hours or more) during the summer session.

MSU will use the federal "assumption method" to determine how many hours a transfer student has completed.

Example: MSU will assume that a transfer student who received 100% of their current Pell award for the aid year at the prior school they attended has completed 24 credit hours, and thus would be eligible for additional Pell in the Summer session at MSU as long as they were enrolled at least half time.  The amount of additional Pell a student qualifies for is determined by the student's EFC (Expected Family Contribution) and the number of credit hours in which the student is enrolled.
